Custom Configuration Overview
When a course is created in Nexus, a corresponding course will be created in CourseKey at the next available course creation interval (see API Schedules and Frequencies). The integration allows for multiple custom course configurations to be auto-applied based on the type of learning environment the course is created for, as well as the expected attendance technology, scheduling and posting methods that makes the most sense for the course.
Custom Configuration Types
There are currently three types of custom configurations that are applied to a course based on the characteristics. These configurations determine the technology used, how attendance schedules are created and the method for posting attendance back to Nexus.
1. Sound is the default for theory, laboratory, simulation and any other on-campus learning environments with known, consistent attendance schedules.
2. QR-Code is used for Nursing's clinical courses where Brookline faculty are present at the site with the students (does not include NUR403C_ or NURS407_ - see GPS below).
QR-CODE COURSES: |
NR202C | NUR304C | NR305C | NR307C | NR308C | NR401C | NR402C | NUR406C |
3. GPS is used for off-campus locations and any other experiences where no Brookline employee is present with the students (typically externships, NUR403C_, NUR407_).
- Any course with "EXT" in the title or "Externship" in the description will automatically apply GPS.
- Any course titled "NUR403C_" or "NURS407_" will also apply GPS for the Nursing programs.
Other Configuration Traits
The are a few other characteristics that will determine what configuration should be applied to a course when it is created in the CourseKey system. While the configuration type is primarily recognized by the technology used, there are two others to consider: attendance scheduling and attendance posting methods.
1. Scheduling Method: Injected vs 24/7
INJECTED - both Sound and QR-Code configured courses will look at the course calendar in Nexus and inject the sessions into CourseKey.
- NOTE: Any changes to schedules should be made in Nexus in the course schedule and will be updated in CourseKey via the APIs.
24/7 - the GPS configured courses will look at the days of the week Nexus shows as available (usually Mon-Sun) and schedules out 24 hour sessions for the entire term.
- NOTE: If additional time is needed to complete externships, the sessions will need to be added in CourseKey manually because Nexus will not have schedules for these courses.
2. Posting Method: Time Missed vs Time Present
TIME MISSED - ONLY is used for any courses (usually Sound) that have an expected and prescribed schedule. This method tells CourseKey to only post the time the student missed for any given day, taking into consideration how much total time was available.
- EXAMPLE: If a student is 20 minutes late to class the system will only post the 20 minutes the student missed.
TIME PRESENT - ONLY is used in both QR-Code and GPS courses that use 24/7 sessions to allow students to check in and out when they need without a strict schedule. This method tells CourseKey to ignore the total time available and only post the amount of time a student was awarded for a day.
- EXAMPLE: If a student spends 8 hours at an externship site the system will only post the 8 hours and will ignore the other available 16 hours.
