How to Log-In Using Biometrics
Biometrics technology provides an easy and secure method for students to log in to the CourseKey application. The app leverages the same stored biometric security data on your device, a fingerprint or face recognition, to verify your identity and log you into CourseKey. This is the same technology used by world-class banking applications!
Enabling Biometrics
If you haven't previously enabled facial and/or fingerprint data on your device, you'll need to complete the setup process before logging in for the first time. The step-by-step process will vary by device, but you'll begin by going to your device settings. Look for an option related to 'Security' or 'Touch ID & Passcode' and complete the steps as indicated in your device's user manual.
Allow CourseKey Access
On select devices, you'll be prompted to allow CourseKey to use Touch/Face ID. CourseKey needs access to be notified by your device that the authentication was successful, but we do not access or store your fingerprint or Face ID data.
What if my Face ID / Touch ID doesn't validate?
Based on your device, you will have a limited number of attempts to validate your Face ID or Touch ID. If you've reached the maximum number of attempts, you'll receive an error.
Android
If you're using an Android device and you've reached the maximum number of attempts, you'll need to wait 30 seconds and then click the option to 'Retry.'
iOS
If you're using an iOS device and you've reached the maximum number of attempts, you'll need to lock and unlock your phone and return to the CourseKey app to try again.
Touch ID
If you continue to get errors using Face ID, follow the tips recommended by your device manufacturer such as:
- Fully cover the sensor with your fingertip.
- Make sure your hands are dry.
- If you continue to encounter an issue, you can return to your device settings and reset your Touch ID.
Face ID
If you continue to get errors using Face ID, follow the tips recommended by your device manufacturer such as:
- Adjust your phone's orientation (hold vertically in portrait orientation).
- Hold your device at arm's length or closer.
- Make sure nothing is blocking your face.
- If you continue to encounter an issue, return to your device settings and add an alternate appearance or reset your Face ID.
Still Not Working?
- Restart your device.
- Uninstall and reinstall the CourseKey app.
- Contact support by submitting a ticket through the mobile app, or emailing support@coursekey.com
FAQ
I’ve enabled biometrics, do I have to scan my fingerprint every time I open the CourseKey app?
No. This feature is meant to simplify the login process and replaces the password at times when it is currently required (when the student logs out, or the session expires).
What if I’ve enabled biometrics, but my fingerprint isn’t scanning correctly?
You may select “Use Password” in the bottom right corner at any time to enter your password to log in to CourseKey.
What if biometrics are not available on my device?
The app will check if biometrics are available, and if not, then it will hide the toggle to enable biometrics.
What if an admin changes my email or password?
If you have biometrics enabled and an admin edits your username or password, you will get an error message that your previous credentials are no longer valid. You can log in again using your updated username and password.
Can I log in on another device?
Yes. This feature does not in any way limit access to CourseKey. You can log in on any other device using your username and password.
Can I enable biometrics the very first time I log in to my account?
Yes. If you were provided a temporary password to log in, you can enable biometrics. The app will verify your biometrics after you finish your account setup (entering a new password and setting a security question).
My device previously saved my username, why do we have the Remember Me feature?
Some devices were previously able to save usernames within the app, however, this was not available on all devices. This new feature allows all devices to save usernames. You may need to re-enter your username when the feature is first released.
Will this be a forced app update?
There will not be a forced app update.
