Question Types Overview

In this article we will briefly discuss each question type that is available when creating assessments in CourseKey. Along with each short description you will find a link with more details on how to create that question type.

Multiple Choice

The Multiple Choice Question allows you to select one or more correct answer(s) from a number of potential answers.

True or False

True or False is a multiple choice question type with two pre-formatted option columns, true or false.

How to Create a True or False Question

Fill in the Blank

The Fill in the Blank question type allows students to type their responses into empty response boxes that have been inserted into a passage of text.

Essay

Essay questions let students give longer, more detailed answers to questions (up to a maximum of 10,000 words). As the grading of an essay is subjective the question cannot be auto scored.

Math (LaTeX)

Our Math question allows students to easily enter complex math formulas and has advanced validation capabilities.

Matching

Match list question type requires students to match two lists of associated items, e.g. countries and their capital cities or historical events and the dates on which they occurred. The student is given one list in a fixed order, along with possible responses below that they drag and drop into the correct location.

How to Create a Matching Question

Pen

A pen question allows students to submit a response that is drawn freehand in a blank space provided, or on top of an uploaded photo. This question type cannot be autoscored.

Short Answer

A short answer question allows students to provide a short definite answer such as a two word phrase, or a number. Auto scoring is available for this question type.
